We are excited to share that Driss El Maloumi, the talented oud virtuoso, is featured in the November 2024 issue of Songlines Magazine! This prestigious publication highlights the best in world music, and Drissโs presence in its pages underscores his significance in the music scene.
In the article, Driss reflects on his musical journey, the rich traditions of oud playing, and how he blends various genres to create his unique sound.
Born in Agadir, Morocco, in 1970, Driss El Maloumi has always embraced his North African-Arab Andalusian roots while cultivating a unique blend of classical Arabic and Western classical music. His early fascination with crafting instruments and diverse musical influences led him to find a deep connection with the oud, which he describes as a “real friend.”
Over two decades, Maloumi has collaborated with an impressive array of international musicians, including Jordi Savall, with whom he shares a profound bond. His latest project, Tafassil (Details in Arabic), is a culmination of years of dedication, combining his compositions with orchestral arrangements, which premiered at the Musikverein in Vienna in November 2023. In addition to Tafassil, Maloumi has recorded an album called Details, reflecting on life’s essential experiences and emotions. With upcoming performances scheduled across Belgium, Estonia, and the Netherlands, Driss El Maloumi continues to inspire audiences with his innovative approach to music.

On Wednesday, October 16th 2024, Manou Gallo will lead a workshop at Montreux Jazz Festival on the Role of Female Instrumentalists in Africa.
The workshops are unique and privileged moments to meet musicians in an intimate setting. Every afternoon of the festival, artists talk about their sources of inspiration or demonstrate their virtuosity. From revered jazzmen to audacious innovators, the range of these encounters is wide and seduces a curious public.
Nicknamed “The African Queen of Bass” by Bootsy Collins, Manou Gallo impresses with her dazzling slap technique and unbeatable groove. Equally at ease in jazz, funk, or afro-pop, the Ivorian bassist has shared the stage with Wyclef Jean, Marcus Miller, and Manu Dibango. Her career took a major turn in 1997 when, upon arriving in Europe, she became the bassist for Zap Mama. Since 2003, she has toured with her own band and participated in numerous projects. With her fifth album, Aliso, Manou Gallo pays tribute to the African icons who have inspired her, including Fela Kuti.
